The taxi journey in India has travelled a long way in the past few years. From prepaid taxis at airports/railway stations to the travel agent in your vicinity doubling up as a taxi provider, from call taxis to radio cabs to cab-aggregators, you have a plethora of options today. The booking process has evolved with the ever increasing technology: from visiting an agent to book a cab to phone booking, online booking to engagement via location based mobile apps.
With endless number of taxi aggregators and service providers disseminating the market, the users are juggling amidst various options, choosing the best service emanating from affordability, accessibility and availability. Most of the users are unaware of the different prices in a particular location or point in time. Tapping a business opportunity in the complication, Ishan Relan, Shiwang Suraj and Apoorv Arora together launched Zapplon in March 2016.
Unveiling The Mystery
Delhi-based Zapplon works as a super aggregator of taxis in India, taking away the pain of juggling between multiple apps to find the nearest/cheapest available cabs, bikes and autos. It displays information to compare cost per distance, estimated time of arrival, etc. from several cab services (Ola, Uber, Mega Cabs, Easy Cabs, Jugnoo Autos and more) in one simple screen.
Zapplon also provides cashback in the form of its own digital currency called Zapps. Users earn Zapps for each ride they book on Zapplon, as well as for referring Zapplon to their friends. Zapps, for now, can be redeemed on ecommerce websites.
Revenue & Traction
Zapplon has a straightforward business model where it earns a revenue for every transaction that it has facilitated through its platform. The platform has close to 10000 downloads on Google Play Store to-date with more than 50% percent month-on-month growth rate and 200 new users joining organically per day. While the percentage of commission from each player varies, the range is from two to ten percent. As of last month, the team claims to have generated a monthly active user base of over 5,000, and transactions touching 50 bookings per day. With the revenue generation from day one and a healthy unit economics, Zapplon has a significant repeat customer base.
Funding & Future Plans
The startup has raised undisclosed amount in seed funding in April from high net worth individuals. It is in the process of integrating the recently launched bike taxi services. It also aims to add self-drive and Intercity services in the near future. Zapplon is striving to integrate multiple APIs and getting them to work in tandem while keeping the size of the app as low as possible.
Various other features like common wallet, handsfree cab booking, women’s security, Offline cab booking, are already in the product release cycle stage and will soon be live. Zapplon will also come up with SelfDrive and Intercity on Android, Web & iOS soon.
With the growing number of cab aggregator platforms in play, there are several apps that follow a similar model as Zapplon. For cab aggregators there is Ixigo Cabs that aggregates results from top taxi services along with other offline taxis all in a single app and then there is ScootApp for outstation travel. How Zapplon taps the market in the aggregating space , the story is yet to unfold.
